ALS

Ambulance Victoria(AV) introduced the Advanced Life Support (ALS) program across the State in March 2001 following the publishing of the Victorian Ministerial Taskforce report labelled 'Review Of Trauma And Emergency Services - Victoria 1999'.

Initially the 6 month course was conducted externally at both Monash & Victoria University, but is now part of the 3 year diploma course undertaken by all new students entering the Victorian Ambulance Service.

ALS Paramedics are able to perform the following advanced skills:

Defibrillation

Fluid Resuscitation

Intravenous Access

Intramuscular Injections

Laryngeal Mask Insertion

ALS Paramedics are able to administer the following medications:

Adrenaline (for anaphylaxis & cardiac arrest)

Anginine (for cardiac chest pain)

Aspirin (for cardiac chest pain)

Atrovent (for asthma)

Dextrose 10% (for hypoglyceamia)

Fentanyl (for pain)

Glucagon (for hypoglycaemia)

GTN Patches (for chest pain)

Hartmanns (for fluid resuscitation in trauma)

Maxalon (for nausea from morphine administration)

Midazolam (for seizures)

Morphine (for pain)

Narcan (for narcotic overdoses)

Penthrane (for pain)

Salbutamol (for asthma)

Stemetil (for nausea)
