The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a new initiative of AV to provide an advanced level of first aid to small communities where Ambulance response times to that area is significant, but the area is isolated, of extremely low workload, therefore making the establishment of an Ambulance Station simply not economically viable.
A present AV has 28 CERTs operating with the initial trial program beginning in November 2001 at Lavers Hill - 65 km south of Colac. In late 2002, a second CERT was set up at Blackwood 70 km east of Ballarat. The success of both teams has now led to 28 teams being set by the end of 2011. Currently AV has approximately 430 CERT Officers who attend approx 3100 cases per year statewide. Training of the CERT Officer is currently overseen by Monash University and requires approximately 70 hours first aid training, with the CERT Officer receiving a Certificate in Health (Emergency Medical Responder). Once qualified an additional 3 hours per month training is required. |
